To offer a partial defence of the captchaistas, it's takes loads of testing to get it right. If you're adding a bunch of fonts and backgrounds, there's always one character that's impossible to see properly, and to find it you have to check several thousand versions. But as a customer - I agree, they're irritating as hell.
