I'm co-hosting a workshop in Finland on October 14th, alongside Simo Routarine and Viv McWaters.

This will be part of the IAF Europe Conference in Helsinki. Here's a bit of the blurb:

Status, or power, games are inherent in meetings - whether acknowledged or not. Sometimes status can get in the way, creating tension between individuals and limiting the potential for authentic communication and engagement.

Status can play out in many ways: sometimes a connection occurs between strangers and they just feel they communicate on the same wavelength; or a careless step on someone's toes - an unseen status challenge - creates tension, or even conflict between individuals.

The facilitator is in a unique status position and can use this to their advantage, enabling them to see status gaps and, most importantly, close those gaps to enhance communication.

We can't avoid status games. This workshop is about learning to recognize them and how to play them more effectively.

Hi Johnnie, that source is explicitly "anarchistic", so naturally it's a pretty extreme set of statements - caricature almost. I recall an HBR paper back in the 80's called "In Praise of Hierarchy" ... which was at the time already an unfashionable push-back against more open democratic management arrangements long before the age of social media.

I find myself doing the same thing these days. Good to recognize opposing sides of any argument, but in practice all things in moderation. Hierarchical authority and responsibility as well as freer communication and action channels. And that's true even with a "service" model .... management nearer the top "serving" the operational needs of those lower down the hierarchy - which is the way I tend to see it. With rights come responsibilities.

Fascinating report from The Economist: How to tell when your boss is lying. Researchers identify a number of patterns common to CEOs and CFOs who turn out, with hindsight, to have misled analysts. Apparently, the liars tend to make more references to general knowledge ("as you know"); and use the first person less.

They also tend to superlatives ("fantastic" rather than "good") and swear more. And they use less phatic speech (ums and ers). Vehemence is no substitute for true certainty.

You probably know the story, quite possibly apocryphal, of Ernest Shackleton's newspaper ad for crew for his expedition to the South Pole:
MEN WANTED FOR HAZARDOUS JOURNEY. LOW WAGES, BITTER COLD, LONG HOURS
OF COMPLETE DARKNESS. SAFE RETURN DOUBTFUL. HONOUR AND RECOGNITION IN
EVENT OF SUCCESS
I was thinking of using this when talking about the power of a good invitation.

And then I wondered if any readers out there had examples of other remarkable invitations they've heard about or experienced?

I saw a documentary on Shackleton that included a photo of that ad, so I suspect it's actually not apocryphal. Even if it is, it's a great story!

Linear thinking about the future is hardwired into our brains. Linear predictions of the future were quite sufficient when our brains were evolving. At that time, our most pressing problem was figuring out where that animal running after us was going to be in 20 seconds. Linear projections worked quite well thousands of years ago and became hardwired. But exponential growth is the reality of information technology. We’ve seen smooth exponential growth in the price-performance and capacity of computing devices since the 1890 U.S. census, in the capacity of wireless data networks for over 100 years, and in biological technologies since before the genome project. There are dozens of other examples. This exponential progress applies to every aspect of the effort to reverse-engineer the brain. via @technoshamen

Dear Brian,

We are terribly sorry for the misunderstanding. It turns out you weren't the target for our advert. We're working on making our content more targeted through digital distribution tools, but for now you're going to have to simply take what you can away from our messaging - which was clearly about sausage - and simply not participate in the microsite and video part.

See, there are people out there in the world who have a job that involves work they find particularly interesting, and it does more for them than paying their bills. Your attitude toward work and life suggest that you wouldn't be the type to make a video even if it brought you definite rewards. This is called a psychographic, Brian.

Also, being 27, you're right on the edge of a technological and behavioral shift. All the people younger than you have grown up with video editing software and the ability to dynamically use the Internet and technology in unprecedented ways. It is they who will go to our site and submit a video. And they will share, and comment, and take interest in the possibilities of their creativity and the creativity of others. (That is, if we do a good job providing them with a reason to be there and to contribute. Leave that up to us).

It's a new culture, Brian - your having children in the past few years and working a job that likely doesn't hinge on the latest developments of the social web has perhaps kept you a bit behind the curve. Don't worry, though - you'll eventually assimilate. And so will 100 million others just like you. In the bell curve graph you're what we call the "late majority." Maybe we can talk next year. Perhaps by then your kids will be sleeping in on Saturdays and you can use that time to explore the creative, social web. We'll be there - feel free to look us up.

Sincerely,

Advertising

I eagerly await the bound copy (well, probably e-book), 'Brian and Advertising: The Complete Correspondence'

Um, Dear Advertising. Trust me when I say this... You're wrong. I work in the industry, and have had to make 100 of these shitty microsites. I've seen the analytics. They're not on your side.

In fact, the only reason these microsites exist is so that some clueless product or brand manager can masturbate to the *idea* of Brian just LOVING YOUR BRAND OMG SO MUCH HE MAKES TEH VIDEOS!!!#111

Truth is, Brian came to your site, and was considered a "bounce."

He left immediately, and so did the 20 year olds, the 15 year olds, and the 40 year olds. Because he was hoping to find dietary information on your sausage, or maybe if it was Fred Meyers or Safeway that sold them. Turns out, he DOES make videos, they're of, and for, his friends. Not his sausage.
