Leadership, toolkits and toothbrushes

beware of models...

Transcript of this video:

I’ve been doing some work recently, looking into

what you might call quiet or reflective leadership.

And a few days ago I found myself experimenting using

chatGPT for research and I got it to generate some six

or seven part models of quiet leadership.

Some of them got quite creative

’cause I’ve got them to, I’ve got it to generate models of,

of quiet leadership based on principles from five different

Shakespeare plays.

It’s actually really good at generating somewhat

plausible models.

And I think there’s a small

part of me thinks, oh, I should take one of these,

rewrite it slightly, and then sell it to people.

That enthusiasm doesn’t not last very long

partly because I always remember,

my friend Roland Harwood saying to me

about models and toolkits.

He said they’re like toothbrushes:

Everybody’s got one and no one wants to use anybody else’s,

which I think is a deep piece of wisdom.

So I, when I’m doing work with people, I’m very wary of

attempting to teach them structures and models

because I think real life experience is richer

and more fascinating than that.
