Not sure if the lawyers themselves know all the rules. The hearings I have done have been formal, but after reading the court transcripts in the Matthew Ghali case (where Mr Ghali received bad service from a Volkswagen dealer), the Americans do seem to get some light relief in their courtrooms. Perhaps the judge watched one too many Night Court episodes.
