Sharing bad first drafts

I’m Johnnie Moore, and I help people work better together

Tim Kastelle’s tweet pointed me to Ben Casnocha’s post about “shitty first drafts”. I thought the comment by Andy McKenzie extended the point quite elegantly:

This is a classic long-run vs short-run trade-off. In the short-run you get embarrassment and status hits from saying stupid things, but in the long run you learn more.

I think a lot of my learning experiences have followed that model. There is a practice called “Speak like you are right, listen like you are wrong.” To be honest, I more often only consciously practice the second stage, have got to the first by not being very self-aware. I still find it helpful!

I shot this in a single eight-minute take, which is in the spirit of an experience of Ralf Wetzel’s workshop, Leading from the Clown. Clown training is probably the deepest and most challenging work I’ve done. Enjoy.
